Eva Strauss-Rosen

Eva Strauss-Rosen (1948-) was born in Copenhagen, Denmark and immigrated to Israel in 1968. She has been schooled in ceramics and fiber arts (Copenhagen), drawing and painting (Tel Aviv), and jewelry making (Jerusalem). In 1984 she moved to Willits, California where she maintains a studio and works in jewelry. After learning Hebrew for the study of Torah and its commentaries, she was led to use this language in her work. Having mastered the difficult technique of making Hebrew characters by lost wax casting, she started creating amulets and jewelry based on the traditions of the Kabbalah. Other artists have made amuletic jewelry, but her designs and the craftsmanship of her work are among the best.

 Gold Sh'ma Pendant

The text on this pendant is a Marcia Falk recreation of arguably the most significant text in the Jewish religion, the Sh'ma. Her adaptation is, "Hear, O Israel. The divine abounds everywhere and dwells in everything; the many are One." (The Book of Blessings: New Jewish Prayers for Daily Life, The Sabbath, and the New Moon Festival by Marcia Falk - Harper San Francisco, 1996).
