Jacob Schülein

Jacob Wolfgang Schülein was one of many successful European Jewish artists whose careers were disrupted by Nazi persecution. He was born in Munich (1881), where he also studied and worked as an artist (with only a short break in Paris). Together with a number of other expressionist Munich artists, he was a founder in 1913 of the famous New Munich Secession group. In 1930 he moved to Berlin and in 1933 fled the Nazi regime ultimately traveling through France and Lisbon to settle in New York City. While he exhibited in galleries in Europe and New York throughout his career, once in the States he never quite regained the prominence he had enjoyed in Germany. His last major exhibit was a 1973 retrospective at the Goethe House, New York, after his death in 1970.

 Jacob Schuelin Sketch

Jacob Schülein is a forgotten German-Jewish master who worked in the first half of the 20th century. This charming sketch (water color and pen and ink) depicts a suspension bridge leading into what appears to be a provincial city. The peaceful scene has been rendered with a remarkable efficiency of stroke. The sketch has been signed (J.W. Schülein) and dated (16) in ink on the lower right corner. It is in fine condition with a reflattened corner on the upper left that has a residual straight stain.

paper and image dimensions: height - 9 3/4"; width 14 1/2"

 Jacob Schuelin Sketch

This Jacob Schülein sketch is of a road next to a small group of buildings. The loneliness of the scene is highlighted by the individual passers-by. The image is rendered in charcoal and water color and is signed (J.W. Schülein) and dated (17) on the lower right corner. The sheet has some minor wrinkles; the upper left and lower right corners are missing; and there are minor chips on the left edge; the image is in good condition
