Jacob Schülein Jacob Wolfgang Schülein was one of many successful European Jewish artists whose careers were disrupted by Nazi persecution. He was born in Munich (1881), where he also studied and worked as an artist (with only a short break in Paris). Together with a number of other expressionist Munich artists, he was a founder in 1913 of the famous New Munich Secession group. In 1930 he moved to Berlin and in 1933 fled the Nazi regime ultimately traveling through France and Lisbon to settle in New York City. While he exhibited in galleries in Europe and New York throughout his career, once in the States he never quite regained the prominence he had enjoyed in Germany. His last major exhibit was a 1973 retrospective at the Goethe House, New York, after his death in 1970.
