The intent of almost every poster is to convey some information to many people in a very short time - the glance that we can afford while hurrying through our lives. According to the English poster designer Abram Games, he attempts to, "...wind the spring and the public, in looking at the poster will have that spring released in its mind." To paraphrase Milton Glaser in his book Graphic Design, the poster "...assumes that the audience addressed has an a priori understanding of the vocabulary...It conveys information based on the audience's previous understanding. Because (it) deals with familiar forms, much of it depends on the cliché." But in the right hands a cliché can become a reenergized symbol, a new mode of perception with deep aesthetic appeal - a work of art. Furthermore, a poster based on the understandings and mental reactions of its viewers must necessarily reflect the culture of those viewers so that posters provide us with hints of history - for us, of Jewish history.
We stock old and contemporary posters that come from or refer to Israel (and Palestine), are published by Jewish organizations, have a Jewish theme, or that we feel are of Jewish interest.
