 Photograph - Wadi Kelt
A view of the spectacular Wadi Kelt, a river bed that plunges down from the Judean Hills to the Red Sea valley. This black & white photograph was taken by one of the photographers of the American Colony. A partial dry imprint of the company is on the lower right corner. On the verso is a copyright stamp of the American Colony group, a notation in ink, "Photo by Stephen A. Haboush & American Colony, Jerusalem", and a faint stamp with the date March 5, 1933. However, the image itself could have been taken any time during the first 3 decades of the 20th C. The print is in excellent condition.

 Aerial Views of Palestine

A collection of 6 aerial photographs of sites in Palestine. This remarkable set of views includes Rishon Lezion, Bet Yoseph in the Jordan Valley, Tel Aviv, Capernaum, the Hadassah Hospital, and the Temple Mount in Jerusalem. These attractive images, which are of historical interest, date from ca. 1937. Each photograph is backed onto cardboard with an explanatory label in German pasted on the back. Schocken, a successful retailer in Germany, established a publishing house in Germany that continued as two branches one in the United States and the other in Israel. The photographs are in good condition: there are two small losses in the image of the Hadassah Hospital, one in the lower left corner and the other in the upper left margin; and a small loss in the upper left corner of the Rishon Lezion photograph. As far as we can tell these six comprise the complete set. They come in a cloth bound folio with small tears along the spine and some staining.

Cafe Jerusalem, Palestine - Original Photogravure

Ya’acov Benor-Kalter (1897-1965), born in Poland, arrived in Palestine in 1921 to become an important photographer and graphic artist. This 1924 published photogravure of Arabs in a local café is one of a set of images commissioned from him by The Pro-Jerusalem Society. The photogravure process was especially appropriate to convey the café’s atmosphere as caught here so successfulyy. The print, on heavy paper, has a number of issues on the borders: repaired tears on left and right edges, what appears to be 4 wormholes, and small losses on the upper right and lower left corners. The image itself is in very good condition. The artist’s name (J. Benor-Kalter) and the title (Jerusalem, 11) are printed just below the image. The print is matted and will be shipped flat.

 Street Scene Jerusalem, Palestine

Ya’acov Benor-Kalter (1897-1965) photographed this Jerusalem street scene in 1924 during British-Mandate times. It is one of twelve photogravures commissioned by an English Christian Zionist organization, the Pro-Jerusalem Society. The overhead view beautifully captures a busy thoroughfare within the walled Old City on which are walking Jews in their Shabbat best, Arabs and others in Western dress. Similar street scenes can still be found today. “Jerusalem, 7” and “J. Benor-Kalter” are printed along the bottom of the image. The heavy paper has some wormholes and a foxing stain - all in the border; there are also small tears on the upper edge and a crease across the top left and upper right edges. The image itself is in excellent condition. We will send this print flat in a mat.

 Street Scene Jerusalem, Palestine

The photogravure printing of a Ya’acov Benor-Kalter (1897-1965) photograph presents a haunting “painterly” study of an elder couple walking along a back street of old Jerusalem. This 1924 study is one of a set of 12 images commissioned by the Pro-Jerusalem Society, an English Christian Zionist organization, the purpose of which was to preserve the city and promote its arts and crafts. “Jerusalem, 6” and “J. Benor-Kalter” are printed along the bottom of the image. Interestingly, while the image is from the 20's, one can at times be walking in an Old City passageway which has the same solitude and ambience. There are minor wormholes throughout, a small loss at the bottom right corner and a small unrepaired crease and tear at the bottom of the left edge. The image is the rich dark expected of a photogravure in good condition. This print will come flat in a mat.
