  MADE IN ISRAEL

We carry a large number of Israeli made items in our gallery. If you wish to support Israeli artists and crafts people by buying their work, we have collected these items into this section for your convenience.

 Israeli Poster - Histadrut (Likud)

The poster advertises the 25th anniversary congress, Nissan 5694 (1934) - Nisan 5719 (1959), of the Histadrut HaOvdim Ha'Le'Umit established by the revisionists (who eventually grouped into the Likud) to compete with the Histadrut. A man, made from the Israeli flag, shouldering a sledge hammer and standing proudly before factory and brick wall symbolizes the worker in Israel. Ironically, the hammer and the sheaf of grain (reduced to a single stalk in the lower left) were iconographic in the art of the Palestinian and early Israeli socialist movements and were (presumably) adapted from the Soviet hammer and sickle. The designer's name (?), Lip, is in the plate at the upper right corner. This is a magnificent example of the many labor posters produced in Palestine and Israel.

The poster is in very good clean condition; the colors are bright; there are a few repaired tears with no losses and creases.

height - 33 1/4"; width - 22"

 Raban - Sketch
Zeev Raban was an important participant in Bezalel, the art academy started by Boris Schatz in Jerusalem at the beginning of the 20th C. In addition to being an artist, book illustrator and teacher, he also headed various of the school's workshops and created the designs for many of the important craft pieces produced there. One of his more important roles was that of commercial designer.

This small (4 x 2 3/4 in.) watercolor and pencil sketch on wove paper appears to be a study for a poster that would advertise wines of the Grands Caves Rishon. A woman's hand holds a card on which Raban has briefly indicated the bottle labels of the 5 new wine brands to be advertised. Behind the large card stand various wine bottles and a wine glass, perhaps set up for a tasting. Raban's poster designs were very influential in the newly evolving area of advertising in British Mandate Palestine. The English lettering of the poster suggests this time period after WWI; we do not know whether this poster was ever published. The sketch is signed Z. Raban (in Hebrew) below the woman's hand. It is in very good condition, with only a small piece of tape on the lower left rear and an apparent small loss just below the tail of the R in Rishon.

 Illustrated Chad Gadya

The song Chad Gadya, “Just One Kid”, is arguably the most widely appreciated of the Seder’s concluding songs. In 1926, Bezalel published this small volume of Raban illustrations for the text of the song. This modestly sized publication has paper covers and 6 internal leaves with one image for each of the verses. While every image references the Holy Land as location, the styling clearly recalls the modernist trends of early 20th century Europe. We are pleased to have obtained a copy of this classic that is in such good condition; there is a small, clean tear on the lower right edge of the front cover extending into the second leaf, and two small tears on the final page. The colors and print are wonderfully vibrant and, apart from handling marks on the front cover, the volume is clean with only slight time aging.

height – “6 5/8; width – 4 3/4“

 Israeli Labor Day Poster

This poster was published by the Histadrut to celebrate the First of May, 1959. May Day was a labor holiday especially celebrated by the socialist movements in Israel. Here the workers of Israel are represented by a woman picking fruit, a construction worker wielding a jack hammer, and a sod carrier. The artists name, Gilady Gofer, is in the plate at the lower left margin. The condition of this linen backed, color lithograph (approx. 38 1/4 x 27 1/2 in) is very good with minor repaired tears in the margins and faint stains on the foreground figure.

Price: $1,800.00

 Histadrut Poster - Yad L'Olim

The Histadrut’s Council of Labor published this poster depicting a group of olim disembarking from a ship sketched out in yellow behind the figures. The text on the bottom reads, “A Hand for the Olim; guidance for the mother, education for the child, occupation for…” The final word is missing due to a loss in the lower left corner (see condition discussion) but based on the available text we suggest that the phrase would have been, “education for the father”. The poster is undated, but from the nature of the image, we would place it in the late 40’s – early 50’s when there was a large migration of Jews from both Northern Africa and the Middle East. This offset lithograph was produced by A. Kaufman, someone with whom we are not acquainted although his name appears on a 1950 JNF poster. The poster appears to be extremely rare, since we have found no reference to it.
Condition - a large repaired loss in the lower left corner that has been replaced and over painted resulting in the loss of one word of the text; minor brownish spot stains, primarily but not exclusively on the right side; small fold mark at top left corner; otherwise clean and bright.

dimensions: height – 26 1/2“, width – 18 5/8“

 Paper Cut - Yehudit Shadur

This is a magnificent 1980 cut by Yehudit Shadur. In the center is the City of Jerusalem, surrounded by the Judean Hills - a heavenly city, the vision of perfect habitation, the House of David where justice and harmony prevail. The surrounding Hebrew text is taken from Psalm 122:

Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem, Jerusalem is builded as a city compact together. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem; they shall prosper that love thee. Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.

The dark blue papercut (approximately 12 x 14 7/8") sits above two additional hand colored sheets that provide the gold, olive green, and pastel orange background. With this paper layering the artist has achieved a 3-dimensional effect that increases the impact of the intricately cut image. Signed (Yehudit Shadur) and dated (1980) in both English and Hebrew.

Artist: Yehudit Shadur
Price: $2,900.00
