 Raban - Song of Songs

This is Raban's illustration for the text of chapter II, verse 7, The watchmen that go about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my mantle from me. The Hebrew text is below the night scene; the border all around represents the walls of the city, into which two watchful lions (symbols of royalty) have been placed.

The photo-offset lithograph produced by Editions Artistiques de Paris is from the 1930 edition of Raban's book printed in Jerusalem by Ariel Press. The print is in excellent condition although age-stained and is signed Z. Raban and Jerusalem in the lower border of the plate. We have tacked the English translation on the rear of the mat holding this print.

Book - Chief Rabbinate of Israel

This lavishly produced volume was published on the occasion of the 1958 dedication of Hechal Shlomo, the seat of Chief Rabbis in Jerusalem. Cloth bound covers house spiral bound pages. Pictures and text, in both Hebrew and English, extol Orthodox life in the new State of Israel. Among the many black and white images are formal portraits of the two Chief Rabbis at the time, Yitzchak Nissim and Isaac Halevy Herzog, a remarkable picture of five soldiers dressed in battle uniform and tallitot each blowing a shofar, images off farmers and workers, and the interiors of various synagogues in Israel. Interspersed among the photographs are short essays on topics of interest to the Orthodox community, such as marriage and education. The soft velveteen covered binding has an inset reproduction taken from an old manuscript and three similar reproductions are found within the text. The volume comes with a battered paper sleeve with a paper label. This cover did its protective job well since volume is in excellent condition with only minor bruises to the cover’s corners and minor rubbing marks on the back. There is a price (?) in pencil on the front interior and a stain on the back interior which may have come from a sheet stored there once. A very interesting volume.

height – 13 1/2“, width – 10“
