This is an arrestingly designed lead free pewter mezuzah case. The rounded body with a repeated shin as the decorative element is flanked by two columns that invoke the gates of the Holy Temple.

The photogravure printing of a Ya’acov Benor-Kalter (1897-1965) photograph presents a haunting “painterly” study of an elder couple walking along a back street of old Jerusalem. This 1924 study is one of a set of 12 images commissioned by the Pro-Jerusalem Society, an English Christian Zionist organization, the purpose of which was to preserve the city and promote its arts and crafts. “Jerusalem, 6” and “J. Benor-Kalter” are printed along the bottom of the image. Interestingly, while the image is from the 20's, one can at times be walking in an Old City passageway which has the same solitude and ambience.There are minor wormholes throughout, a small loss at the bottom right corner and a small unrepaired crease and tear at the bottom of the left edge. The image is the rich dark expected of a photogravure in good condition. This print will come flat in a mat.

The graphic language of this JNF poster is typical of that used during the early days of the State of Israel. A hand clutching (presumably rich) soil is set against a background of plowed fields and a farming community's structures. The Zionist message declares that the Jewish homeland will be redeemed by cultivating the land. The poster (photo-offset on a lithograph background) has faintly visible pinholes in the 4 corners, a few minor dings on the edges and is backed with linen.
